Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team dropped their final regular-season game to Wesleyan University 15-14 on Wednesday afternoon at Citrin Field.
In what turned out to be a heated neck-and-neck battle to the end, the first quarter wouldn't have led you to believe it. The first nine minutes went scoreless, but Wesleyan struck first with two consecutive goals. Then, the Camels took over. Sophomore
Jack Tenzer (Charlotte, N.C.) dominated the next three minutes with a trio goals of his own, including two in less than 15 seconds. Senior
Patrick Linehan (Baltimore, MD) and freshman
Patrick Atkins (Topsfield, Mass.) followed up with two goals in the last 60 seconds of the quarter, taking the Camels into the second quarter up 5-2.
The Camels started the second quarter maintaining the momentum, scoring the only two goals of the first 5 minutes of the quarter from freshman JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) and Tenzer. The Cardinals started a run of their own, scoring five goals in the last eight minutes of the quarter. Only junior
Jared Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) was able to score during that run, scoring his first with 3:58 left in the quarter, and keeping the Camels in the lead going into halftime, 8-7.
The Cardinals struck first in the second half, scoring two goals to put Wesleyan up one with five minutes left in the third quarter. But the Camels didn't quit, adding two more goals from junior Gus Mazzocca (West Hartford, Conn.) and junior
Jack Venturelli (Duxbury, Mass.) before the quarter ended, maintaining their one goal lead heading into the final 15 minutes of the game.
Five lead changes occurred in the last 15 minutes of the game, with the Cardinals tying the game just two minutes into the quarter. Rainville scored his first of three fourth-quarter goals just 30 seconds later to give the Camels the lead again, but the Cardinals responded with two goals of their own in the following 90 seconds. After a few of the only scoreless minutes of this quarter passed, senior Nick Farnham (Falmouth, Maine) scored to tie the game back up, then Rainville struck again a minute later giving the Camels back the lead. The two teams exchanged goals within the next minute, including Rainville's third goal of the quarter and 4th of the game, keeping the Camels in the lead with 5 minutes left. Numerous shots by both teams had scoring potential, but the Cardinals were the ones who netted the final two goals of the game. A last-second effort by the Camels went just wide of the goal as the buzzer sounded, ending the game, 14-15.
Connecticut College (5-8, NESCAC 3-7) was led by Tenzer and Rainville, each with four goals and two assists in the game. Sophomore goalie Will Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) recorded the loss with 12 saves.
The Camels will next compete in the first round of the NESCAC Tournament on Saturday, April 30, and will play either Tufts or Bowdoin on ther road.
