Box Score MEDFORD, Mass. - The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team gave top-seeded Tufts all they could handle, but ultimately came up short in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Tournament. The Camels fell to the Jumbos 19-14 on Saturday afternoon at Bello Field.
The eighth-seeded Camels entered the game against the defending conference champions as the underdogs, but proved they could play with one of the best teams in the nation for the second time this season.
Connecticut College (5-9, 3-8 NESCAC) started off hot, scoring the first two goals of the contest coming from the sticks of
Gus Mazzocca (West Hartford, Conn.) and
Nick Farnham (Falmouth, Maine). But Tufts, one of the top-scoring offenses in the NESCAC, answered back with four consecutive goals. With 2:45 remaining in the opening frame,
Jared Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) ended the run to cut the Jumbos' lead to one goal.
Rainville opened up the second quarter in the same way, with a goal off an assist from Farnham to tie the score at 4-4. It would not stay knotted for long, as the Jumbos went on another run, outscoring the Camels 5-1 for the rest of the stanza.
To begin the second half, Tufts continued their offensive burst with another three-goal spree to extend the lead to 12-5. Mazzocca netted his second goal of the game, and
JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) and
Sean Fox (Dunwoody, Ga.) added scores of their own in the third quarter, but the Jumbos offensive attacked thwarted them from cutting into the lead. After three quarters, the Camels trailed 16-8.
With only 15 minutes left to play, Conn College pushed the attack. After trading goals in the first few minutes of the quarter, the Camels rattled off five straight scores to pull within four of Tufts. Mazzocca completed his hat trick, and Rainville, Farnham, Ford and
Patrick Linehan (Baltimore, Md.) all found the back of the net. But the deficit was too large to overcome, and time ran out with the Camels on the wrong end of a 19-14 decision.
Rainville led the way with four goals and two assists. Ford tallied a pair of goals and assists for four total points. Sophomore goalie
Will Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) made 13 saves between the pipes for the Camels.
Connecticut College graduates 10 seniors and returns over 20 varsity letter-winners next season.
