MEDFORD, Mass. -
The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team lost a conference game against the Tufts Jumbos 21-14 on a cloudy afternoon at Bello Field.
In a physical first quarter, the Camels did a good job of slowing the Jumbos' pace down. A team that has scored 178 goals so far this season, Tufts averages almost 20 goals per game while the Camels average 10. The Jumbos had five goals in the first quarter. Sophomore Jack Tenzer (Charlotte, N.C.), senior
Nick Farnham (Falmouth, Maine), and freshman
JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) each had a goal for the visitors, finishing the quarter down 5-3.
The Jumbos entered the second quarter attacking hard on offense, scoring three goals in the first three minutes. They maintained the offensive possession for a majority of the first five minutes of the quarter, preventing the Camels from getting any solid shooting opportunity. Junior Jared Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) broke the Jumbos' streak with back-to-back goals at five and seven minutes into the quarter. Ford added his second goal, but two more goals from Tufts sent the Camels to the locker room down 11-6 at halftime.
Farnham got the Camels on the board first with a goal less than two minutes into the second half. From there, the teams traded goals for the next 10 minutes until the Camels made their run. Freshman Aidan McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) scored two goals in 38 seconds, and Ford added a third less than a minute later. Tufts scored once more at the two-minute mark before thunder sounded, and the game paused at a rain delay with the score 15-12.
After an hour and a half rain delay, the game resumed and it was clear the weather had not slowed the Jumbos down as they netted two quick goals. Ford stopped the Jumbos' run with a goal with 10:21 left in the game and at the two-minute mark senior Patrick Linehan (Baltimore, MD) scored off a nice pass from Farnham. But the intensity from the Tufts offense was just too much for the Camels as the Jumbos scored 4 times, winning the game 21-14.
Sophomore goalie Will Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was pelted by shots but did a solid job of defending the net with 13 saves. Tufts' Conner Garzone recorded the win with 12 saves of his own.
Connecticut College (4-4, NESCAC 3-3) were led by Ford with four goals and Farnham with three goals and one assist. Rainville had two goals and two assists, McAvoy had two goals, freshman Patrick Atkins (Topsfield, Mass.) had one goal and three assists.
Next up, the Camels will host the Amherst Mammoths at Silfen Field on Wednesday, April 13.
