Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 1 Men's Soccer Scores Four Second Half Goals To Down Rhode Island College

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College men's soccer team scored all four goals in the second half and shutout Rhode Island College on Tuesday afternoon at Silfen Field. Senior Augie Djerdjaj (Mahopac, N.Y.) paced the Camels with a goal and an assist.

Following a scoreless draw with Tufts over the weekend, the No. 1 ranked Camels found their offensive rhythm in the final 45 minutes to take down the Anchormen in a non-conference matchup.

The Camels dominated the possession battle in the first half, controlling the ball on the opponents' defensive end for the majority of the period. Conn earned six corner kicks, but could not take advantage of its opportunities on the offensive end.

Despite the frustrating start to the game, the Camels' offense kicked it into gear just seven minutes into the second half.

In Anchormen territory, Djerdjaj floated a pass into the box to teammate Sam Boehm (Lexington, Mass.). Boehm sprinted up the left side towards the end line and delivered a perfect strike to Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) who slid forward and used his left foot to muster the ball past Anchormen goalkeeper Wesley Perrotto. The tally gave the Camels a 1-0 lead and broke a 142 minute scoreless streak dating back to last week.

At the 59:16 mark, Scoffone again made his presence felt on the offensive end. After receiving the ball in the right side of the box, the junior had an open look on the keeper, but was taken down by an Anchormen defender forcing a penalty kick. Djerdjaj took the attempt for the Camels and smashed home the PK to extend the Conn lead to 2-0.

Continuing to put on the pressure, the Camels created more opportunities. In the 72nd minute, Alessandro Horvath Diano (New Haven, Conn.) delivered a beautiful cross into the box to Jake Creus (Rye, N.Y.) on the left side of the goalkeeper. Creus waited patiently until he centered a pass to a wide open Gavin Vanden Berg (Lake Forest Park, Wash.) who easily beat Perrotto with a shot from his left foot for his second goal of the season.

Junior Dylan Zane (Montego Bay, Jamaica) earned the fourth goal of the day for the Camels in the 83rd minute when his cross from inside the goal box caromed off an Anchormen defender and into the net.

The defense factored heavily into the Camels' 4-0 victory, only allowing two shots on goal in the entirety of the game.

The Camels tallied 25 total shots and put eight on net. Conn goalkeepers Sam Maidenberg (South Orange, N.J.) and Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) split time between the pipes for the home team, each recording one save.

Connecticut College (2-0-1, 0-0-1 NESCAC) will next host NESCAC rival Bowdoin on Saturday, September 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Freeman Field.
