BRUNSWICK, Maine. – The Connecticut College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 setback at Bowdoin College on Friday night in NESCAC action at Morrell Gymnasium.
Conn dropped the first two sets but bounced back to win the third and extend the match. Bowdoin (4-3, 2-1 NESCAC) closed out the match in the fourth, winning by set scores of 27-25, 25-9, 23-25 and 25-13.
Riley Lord (Exeter, N.H.) paced the Camels with nine kills while
Christina Leduc (North Dennis, Mass.),
Emma Wheeler (Meredith, N.H.) and
Katherine Randall (Chicago, Ill.) added six apiece. Wheeler also posted four blocks while Randall supplied 21 digs.
Jenna Robbins recorded a match-high 16 kills to fuel Bowdoin's attack.
The match kicked off with an exciting first set that featured 15 ties and nine lead changes. Trailing late in the set, Conn tied the score on a kill by Lord and took a 25-24 lead on a miscue by Robbins. However, the Polar Bears reeled off three straight points to secure the early 1-0 advantage.
The momentum carried over into the second set as Bowdoin raced out to an 11-3 lead and never looked back. The Camels, who managed only six kills in the set, quickly found themselves in a 2-0 hole.
The third set was another battle, as neither side led by more than three. The Camels trailed 20-18 when a kill by Leduc sparked a 5-1 run that put the visitors in the driver's seat. Wheeler contributed a kill and a block during the stretch while
Annie Wibbelsman (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) added a pair of kills. Wheeler later secured the final point of the set with a service ace to keep Conn in the match.
Bowdoin used a 5-0 spurt to build a 13-6 lead in the fourth set and cruised to the finish. Sarah Evans posted five of her 15 kills in the final stanza to lead the Polar Bears to victory.
Conn (4-2 overall, 1-2 NESCAC) will next take part in a tri-match at Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday, September 24. The Camels take on the University of Southern Maine at 2 p.m. and ECSU at 4 p.m.
