Men's Soccer Draws With Wheaton in Non-Conference Matchup

NEW LONDON, Conn. - After a back-and-forth game, the Connecticut College men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw against Wheaton College on Tuesday afternoon at Freeman Field.

The Camels held a 2-1 advantage on the scoreboard in the 88th minute until Lyons' senior Ewan Noble scored a miraculous equalizing goal off a free kick from just inside midfield.

After falling to Wheaton in the season opener in 2021, the Camels entered Tuesday's game looking for redemption on their home field.

But the defending national champions played a sluggish first half with very little offensive opportunities. Despite the struggles, the defense remained steady and limited most attempts from the visiting Lyons.

However, in the 23rd minute, Wheaton (4-3-3) was able to convert on a chance when Alasdair Ferrier broke through the Camel defense and into the penalty box. He made a centering pass to teammate Jack Brusso who was able to get it past Conn goalkeeper Sam Maidenberg (South Orange, N.J.) for the first goal of the game.

The lackluster first half for the home team was salvaged in the 44th minute when Jake Creus (Rye, N.Y.) sprinted up the right side of the field and made an attempt from inside the penalty area. The shot hit off the post and trickled back toward midfield, but defender Jack Kelesoglu (Westfield, N.J.) was able to tap the ball into the net to tie the game.

In the second half, the Camels came out with a much more aggressive approach. Less than 20 minutes in, Conn was able to capitalize on a free kick from Sam Boehm (Lexington, Mass.). Just inside the right corner, the junior executed a cross into the penalty area. The ball caromed off the head of teammate Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.) right to Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) who converted the header to give the Camels a 2-1 lead.

Conn continued to push the offensive attack on its ensuing possessions and had several near-misses that would have increased its lead. Rye Jaran (Downington, Pa.) clanged a shot off the left goalpost, and Scoffone missed off the right post just a minute later. Following Scaffone's miss, Spatz nearly had his first goal when the goalkeeper vacated the net to retrieve the ball, but the shot was saved in the front of the net by a Lyons' defender who used his head to block the would-be goal.

With time winding down, Wheaton earned a free kick from about eight yards into Conn territory. That is when Noble delivered the game-tying score that hit off the crossbar and rolled into the net for a stunning result-changing outcome.

The final two minutes were even more frantic when Kelesoglu earned a red card. But the Camels were able to stave off the remaining attempts, and the game would end in a 2-2 draw.

Conn tallied four shots on goal and three additional shots hit off the goalposts. Maidenberg recorded two saves for the Camels.

Connecticut College (3-1-2) will continue its homestand with a NESCAC matchup against Hamilton on Saturday, October 1 at 2:30 p.m.
