Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women's Ice Hockey Falls To No. 4 Amherst 3-1

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team dropped a NESCAC matchup to Amherst on Saturday afternoon. The Mammoths took down the Camels 3-1 to complete the weekend sweep.

Including Saturday's victory, Amherst (13-1 overall, 7-1 NESCAC) has won 12 straight games, dating back to November 22.

After blanking the Camels 3-0 on Friday, the Mammoths came out swinging once again on Saturday. Leslie Schwartz scored the opening goal of the game off assists from teammates Avery Flynn and Rylee Glennon.

Conn goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) stopped eight shots during the first period to hold the deficit to 1-0. Amherst's back line was stifling, limiting the Camels to only two shots on goal in the opening frame.

The Mammoths added to their lead in the second period. First, Jayna Park scored at the 6:36 mark to double up the advantage. Later on in the period, Anna Baxter scored the third Amherst goal off another assist from Flynn.

In the third period, Wieczorek and the Camels defense did their job to stop the relentless offensive attack from the Mammoths. With less than one minute remaining in the contest, Conn was finally able to break through on the scoreboard when first year Sydney Frank (Stillwater, N.Y.) found the back of the net. Teammates Kiley Smith (Marion, Mass.) and Caroline O'Keefe (Winthrop, Mass.) earned assists on the score.

Despite the late effort, time ran out on the clock, giving Amherst the 3-1 victory. The win marked the seventh straight victory for the Mammoths over the Camels.

Wieczorek stopped 29 shots in net for Conn, while Amherst goaltender Natalie Stott made 12 saves between the pipes. The Camels committed three penalties throughout the course of the game, but killed off each power play opportunity. The Mammoths only committed a single infraction.

Connecticut College (7-4 overall, 5-3 NESCAC) will return to action on Monday, January 16 on the road against Salve Regina.
