Women's Ice Hockey, Middlebury Play To 1-1 Tie

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) made a season-high 34 saves while only allowing one goal to force a 1-1 tie with No. 6 Middlebury on Friday evening at Dayton Arena.

The visitors entered the contest riding a four-game winning streak, but the play of Wieczorek and the Conn defense limited one of the conference's best offenses to a single score. With the draw, the two teams remain tied for second place in the NESCAC with 18.5 total points.

The Panthers struck first early on in the opening frame. Kylee Quinlan skated into Camels territory and ripped a wrister just inside the blue line, sneaking it past Wieczorek.

After killing off a Middlebury power play, the Camels went on the attack. With just under five minutes remaining in the period, Caroline O'Keefe (Winthrop, Mass.) intercepted a pass from behind the Panthers net. In one fluid movement, the senior gathered the puck, skated around the net and took a wrist shot on goal, completing the beautiful wraparound score to tie the game at 1-1.

In the second period, the Panthers were the aggressors on the offensive end, but Wieczorek was unyielding, stopping 10 shots to hold Middlebury off the scoreboard. The game would remain tied heading into the final stanza.

The final 20 minutes of regulation resulted in a scoreless stalemate. Both teams tallied nine shots on goal, but Wieczorek and Panthers goaltender Sophia Merageas held strong to force overtime.

In the extra period, the Camels goaltender once again came up big, stopping a breakaway, one-timer opportunity for the Panthers. With time winding down, Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) was able to get off a shot just before the buzzer, but Merageas deflected the puck away to preserve the tie.

In total, Wieczorek stopped 34 shots while Merageas tallied 18 saves. Conn's penalty kill unit was fantastic throughout the game, holding Middlebury (10-4-2 overall, 6-2-1 NESCAC) scoreless on five power play opportunities.

Connecticut College (8-7-1 overall, 5-5-1 NESAC) will once again host the Panthers on Saturday, January 27 at 3 p.m.
