MBB Comes Up Short in Second-Half Comeback at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine. – After erasing a 15-point deficit in the second half, the Connecticut College men's basketball team came up on the short end of a 75-71 final on Sunday afternoon against Colby College at the Margaret M. Crook Center.

David Murray (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) posted game highs of 20 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Camels, who dropped to 12-8 overall (3-3 NESCAC). Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, Mass.) added 19 points and two blocks while Cam Schainfeld (Newton, Mass.) chipped in 13 points and four assists.

In the first half, Colby pulled in front at the 13:10 mark on a three-pointer by Max Poulton, part of a 10-0 run for the hosts. The Mules shot 7-for-15 from deep in the half en route to a 37-30 lead at the break.

Colby took its biggest lead of the game at 56-41 following a layup by Kyle Butler with 11:45 remaining. As has been the case all season, the Camels never quit and rallied back quickly behind 14 unanswered points over a four-minute stretch. Elias Espinosa (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) provided a pair of three-pointers during the spurt, and a layup by Murray capped the stretch and tied the game at 59-59 with 5:31 left.

The Mules regained the lead on their next possession as Will King drained a three, and he later added a second to bump the margin to five. A steal and layup by Noah Tyson expanded Colby's lead to 67-60 with 3:09 to play.

Back-to-back layups by Flynn and Caelin Peters (Hamilton, Bermuda) made it a one-possession game with 1:43 to go, but Poulton responded with a big bucket to put the Mules up five. The Camels twice more cut the deficit to three, but each time Colby converted a pair of free throws to pad the margin.

Murray's 16 rebounds—six of which came on the offensive glass—were a career high. The double-double was his third of the season.

Poulton finished with 20 points to lead three Mules in double figures.

Conn College returns to action at Amherst College on Friday, February 3 at 7:00 p.m.
