Women's Ice Hockey Routs Bowdoin 6-1

NEW LONDON, Conn. – First year Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team to a 6-1 rout over Bowdoin on Friday night at Dayton Arena.

Seiple along with teammates Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.), Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.), Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.), and Sydney Frank (Stillwater, N.Y.) tallied goals, resulting in a balanced offensive attack for the Camels' fourth NESCAC win of the season.

Conca got the hosts on the board first at the 13:31 mark of the opening period. After defender Kylie McCarthy (Dedham, Mass.) took a shot from just inside the blue line, Conca expertly redirected the puck in front of the net to get it by Polar Bears goaltender Danielle Marquez to give the Camels the 1-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later, Sammons forced a turnover in the Bowdoin defensive end. The sophomore collected the puck and immediately fired a wrister for an unassisted goal to extend the Camels lead to 2-0 heading into the second period.

Bowdoin played more aggressively on the offensive end to begin the middle stanza. The Polar Bears controlled possession for the majority of the period and finally capitalized on an opportunity when Elena DiMagno scored to cut the Conn lead to 2-1.

But the Camels didn't allow the visitors to get back in the game. Following a Bowdoin penalty, Seiple scored her first goal off a brilliant feed from classmate Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) in front of the net. The Camels would lead 3-1 heading into the final frame.

Just under three minutes in, McGann tallied the first goal of her collegiate career to increase the Camels' lead to 4-1. After forcing a turnover, Kelly Matthews (Abington, Mass.) found McGann waiting at the back post who calmly ripped a wrist shot, beating Marquez to the glove side.

At the 7:04 mark, Conn added its fifth score of the game when McCarthy once again took a shot from inside the blue line. This time, Frank was there to redirect the shot and increase the advantage to 5-1.

Seiple capped off the brilliant offensive team performance with less than one minute remaining in the contest. After a face off win by Frank in the Bowdoin defensive end, Nicollette Roark (Chelmsford, Mass.) took a shot on goal that deflected off the blocker of the Polar Bears goaltender. Seiple collected the rebound and quickly fired a wrister that found the back of the net to seal the 6-1 victory for the Camels.

Conn goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) picked up the win between the pipes, stopping 19 shots. Marquez and Sally Solotaroff-Webber split time in goal for Bowdoin, collecting 17 saves cumulatively. The Camels power play unit was effective, converting on two-of-four opportunities. The hosts also killed off all four power play chances for the Polar Bears.

Connecticut College (6-2 overall, 4-1 NESCAC) is currently tied with Amherst atop the conference standings. The Camels will next play Bowdoin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 7 at Dayton Arena.
