CAMBRIDGE, Mass.. - The Connecticut College men's water polo team opened the 2023 Harvard Invitational, falling twice on day one, first to Wagner 21-4, and then to Occidental 19-8. With the two losses, the Camels fall 1-7 on the season.
GAME 1: WAGNER 21 - CONN 4
Wagner (11-10) started quickly, tallying the first six goals of the contest, before Conn (1-7) was able to respond. Jeffrey Harrington (San Diego, Calif.) got the Camels on the board with 2:28 left in the quarter, but the Seahawks added one more goal late in the period to take a 7-1 lead after one. Wagner opened the second quarter with three straight goals, but the run was ended on a goal by Grant Archer (Miami, Fla.) with just over five minutes remaining in the half. Wagner tallied five more goals to take a 15-2 lead at the break.
The pace slowed down in the second half, but Wagner pushed the lead to 18-2 with 1:21 left in the third quarter. Sebastian Parilov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added a goal late in the quarter, making it 19-3, heading to the fourth. After an early goal from the Seahawks in the final quarter, Harrington notched his second goal of the contest, making it 19-4. Wagner tallied two more goals, coming away with the 21-4 win.
GAME 2: OCCIDENTAL 19 - CONN 8
Occidental (8-11) opened the scoring a minute and a half into the contest, but Conn answered with the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead with 3:45 remaining, with both goals coming from Harrington. The Tigers answered with three goals, taking a 4-2 lead after the first quarter. Occidental pushed the lead to 5-2 early in the second quarter, but Harrington answered just over a minute later, cutting the lead to 5-3. Occidental tallied the next five goals, before Jesse Ellis (Fresno, Calif.) scored with just over a minute left in the half, but the Tigers added one more to lead 11-4 at the break.
Harrington picked up his fourth goal early in the third quarter, before four more goals from Occidental. Down 15-5, Archer and Ellis scored just over a minute apart, as Conn trailed 16-7 heading to the fourth. The Tigers opened the fourth quarter with two goals, before Archer added his second of the contest, cutting the lead to 18-8. Occidental added one more goal to come away with the 19-8 win.
Conn wraps up the Harvard Invitational tomorrow, taking on Pomona-Pitzer at 12:30 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
