WATERFORD, Conn – The Connecticut College men's and women's cross country teams hosted the Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday at Harkness Memorial State Park.
The Camels finished sixth in the women's race and 14th in the men's.
In the Women's 6k Caroline Grape '22 Memorial Blue Championship Race, fifth-ranked NYU placed five runners in the top 15 to best the field of 26 teams with 36 points. Central (130), Vassar (138), St. Olaf (157) and Middlebury (171) rounded out the top five teams.
St. Benedict's Fiona Smith smashed the course record en route to individual medalist honors. Her time of 19:51.1 was more than a minute ahead of her nearest competitor, and she shaved just over a minute off the course record which was previously set by Ithaca's Parley Hannan (20:52) in 2019.
In the Men's 8k Blue Championship Race, 10th-ranked St. Olaf topped the field of 26 teams with 69 points. Tufts (75), Central (128), Middlebury (128) and NYU (156) rounded out the top five teams.
Only four seconds separated the top-two finishers, with Central's Caleb Silver holding off St. Olaf's Will Kelly down the stretch. Silver's time of 24:13.4 was the eighth-fastest all-time at the event.
Conn will next compete at the NESCAC Championship on October 28 in Amherst, Mass.
Women's Race
The Camels, who earlier this week broke into the USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Coaches Poll at No. 30, turned in yet another strong performance. Conn finished behind five other nationally-ranked teams—all of which were ranked above them—while placing ahead of No. 13 Amherst and No. 17 Bates.
Abigail Fernald (Avon, Conn.) led the charge with the best performance of her collegiate career. She finished 14th overall in a time of 21:51.4, the third-fastest time by a Conn runner in the history of the event. Only Ashley Curran '17 (21:41) and Meredith Cronin '21 (21:48) have posted faster times on the Harkness Park course.
Despite Fernald's torrid pace, her teammates didn't finish far behind. The spread between Conn's top-five runners was less than a minute, and all five posted collegiate-best times.
Alsacia Timmerman (Morrisville, Vt.) was the second Camel across the finish line in a time of 22:23.2, and the duo of
Edin Sisson (Sidney, Maine) and
Abigail Williams (Waterville, Maine) were seconds apart at 22:37.2 and 22:40.2, respectively.
Grace McDonough (Londonderry, N.H.) rounded out the scoring with a time of 22:50.6, giving Conn a total of 182 points.
