LEWISTON, Maine – The Connecticut College field hockey team suffered a 4-1 setback against No. 10 Bates College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC match-up at Campus Ave. Field.
The Bobcats (9-4 overall, 5-3 NESCAC) built a 3-0 lead in the first half, added a goal in the second and were seconds away from a shutout. However,
Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) put the Camels on the scoreboard before the final whistle, notching her third goal in the last four games.
Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) made four saves in 30 minutes of work before turning things over to
Sophie Moniz (Alexandria, Va.) for the second half. Moniz faced three shots and recorded one save over the final 30 minutes.
Bates was quick to find the back of the cage, as Kami Lambert scored less than two minutes into the game to give the hosts an early goal. Paige Cote and Anna Cote added tallies in the second quarter as the Bobcats took a 3-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
The Camels earned five penalty corners in the third quarter but couldn't take advantage. In the fourth, Anna Cote tacked on another goal with 9:14 left in the game to extend the Bates lead to 4-0.
With time winding down,
Kendall Arnold (Pawling, N.Y.) delivered a feed in front of the cage, and McGann was eventually able to gather the pass while avoiding a charging Bates keeper. After a few steps to her left, McGann turned and lofted a shot into the top-right corner of the cage with just 11 seconds remaining in regulation. The goal was her team-leading fifth of the year.
Conn (5-9 overall, 1-8 NESCAC) will close out the season at No. 18 Wesleyan University on Tuesday, October 24 at 6:00 p.m.
