CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Connecticut College opened up day one of the 2023 CWPA D3 Eastern Championships, falling to Washington and Jefferson 11-8 in game one, before falling to Johns Hopkins 24-6 in the nightcap. With the losses, Conn falls to 1-10 on the season.
GAME ONE: Washington and Jefferson 11, Conn 8
Conn (1-10) started quickly, jumping out to a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the contest on a goal by Cormac Stevens (Philadelphia, Pa.). Washington and Jefferson tied the game at one, before Grant Archer (Miami, Fla.) put the Camels back in front 2-1 with two minutes to play. The Presidents tallied twice to take a 3-2 lead after one. Washington and Jefferson pushed the lead to 4-2, before back-to-back goals from Stevens and Matthew Miaschoss (Malibu, Calif.) knotted the game at four. The Presidents scored late in the quarter to lead 5-4 at the break.
Washington and Jefferson outscored Conn 4-1 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 9-5, heading to the fourth. Archer tallied the lone goal for the Camels in the frame. Conn pushed for the comeback in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to 9-7, with just under five minutes to play, on goals from Archer and Carson Neidert (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Two straight goals from the Presidents pushed the lead to 11-7, but Jeffrey Harrington (San Diego, Calif.) tallied, making it 11-8. However, that was as close as Conn got, falling 11-8.
GAME TWO: Johns Hopkins 24, Conn 6
Johns Hopkins started game two quickly, jumping out to a 4-0 advantage after the opening quarter. The Blue Jays pushed the lead to 8-0, before Archer got Conn on the board with just over two minutes remaining in the half. Hopkins tallied two more goals to take a 10-1 lead at the half.
Both offenses came to life in the second half, as the teams combined for 19 goals. After four more goals for the Blue Jays, Ethan Hipsky (Glastonbury, Conn.) responded for the Camels. It was three more goals for Hopkins, but Stevens and Jesse Ellis (Fresno, Calif.) each found the back of the net, before one more goal for the Blue Jays, gave Hopkins an 18-4 lead after three. Ellis added two more goals in the fourth quarter for Conn, but the Camels fell to Johns Hopkins 24-6.
Conn wraps up the 2023 CWPA D3 Eastern Championships by taking on Penn State Behrend at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday in Cambridge, Mass.
