Men's Soccer Wraps Up Unbeaten Regular Season With 2-2 Draw at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-2 draw on the road at Wesleyan University to secure the first unbeaten regular season in program history. With the draw, Conn moves to 10-0-5 overall and 5-0-5 in the NESCAC, while Wesleyan moves to 5-5-5 and 2-3-5 in conference play.

Conn (10-0-5, 5-0-5) started quickly, opening the scoring just over a minute into the contest on a penalty kick, as Matt Scoffone's (Thornton, Pa.) shot hit a hand, awarding the Camels the penalty. Scoffone stepped up to the spot and shot to the left side of the goal, getting past Wesleyan's (5-5-5, 2-3-5) Josh Nadison, to put Conn up 1-0. Both sides settled in after the early goal, trading throw-ins as the squads looked for an offensive opportunity.

With just under 17 minutes to play in the half, Scoffone played a ball across the box to Sam Boehm (Lexington, Mass.), laying it off to Jake Creus, who tapped the ball into the open cage, extending the lead to 2-0. Late in the half, the Cardinals were given a penalty kick themselves, and Zack Burd converted, as Conn led 2-1 at the break.

10 minutes into the second half, Wesleyan found an equalizer on a goal from Lucas Reuhlemann, knotting the game at two. Conn almost immediately retook the lead, but Gavin Mpiana's (Cape Town, South Africa) hit the inside of the post and somehow stayed out, keeping the game tied. The Camels looked for the winning goal, but came up empty as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Conn outshot Wesleyan 14-8 overall, including 8-5 on shots on target, while holding a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) got the start in goal, making three saves on five shots. Scoffone paced the Camels attack with three points on one goal and one assist, tallying four shots in the contest. Additionally, Creus and Boehm added a goal and an assist respectively for Conn.

Nadison got the start between the sticks, making six saves on eight shots for the Cardinals. Burd and Ruehlemann led the Wesleyan offense, as each tallied a goal.

Conn has clinched a berth in the NESCAC playoffs and will wait to see their matchup in the quarterfinal on Saturday, with an opponent and time to be announced later this evening.
