NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback to Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon in NESCAC play at Luce Field House.
The Continentals won by set scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-20 to improve to 7-6 overall (3-3 NESCAC). Hamilton hit .294 as a team with 47 kills and 15 errors. Kate Carman led the attack with a match-high 18 kills while Summer McClintic added 15.
The Camels finished with fewer attack errors but couldn't match their opponent's production at the net.
Riley Lord (Exeter, N.H.) paced Conn with eight kills while
Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.) had six, and
Emma Wheeler (Meredith, N.H.) contributed three kills and a match-high six block assists.
After Hamilton started the match with a 6-1 spurt to take the early lead, Conn responded with a 6-1 run of its own to tie things up. Neither side led by more than three the rest of the way, but a pair of late errors by the Camels gave the Continentals the set. Carman had seven of Hamilton's 16 kills in the stanza.
The Continentals led the entire second set as Carman continued to wreak havoc at the net, matching her kills total from the opening frame. McClintic also put down four balls as Hamilton grabbed the 2-0 advantage.
In the third, Conn got out to a 5-2 start but couldn't hold the lead. Hamilton pulled ahead behind a 10-2 spurt and never trailed again. The Camels did tie the score at three different points—the final at 18-18 after a kill by Lord—but the visitors never wavered. The Continentals clinched the match by winning seven of the final nine points, with Drew Stimson supplying three kills during the final stretch.
Conn College (8-7 overall, 2-5 NESCAC) will next host Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, October 11 at 6:00 p.m.
