NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College men's water polo team came up short in their comeback effort falling 14-11 to LIU on Sunday afternoon from Lott Natatorium.. With the loss, Conn falls to 2-19 on the year.
LIU started quickly jumping out to a 4-0 lead after the opening quarter. Early in the second quarter Conn (2-19) got on the board, as Matthew Maischoss (Malibu, Calif.) found the cage at 7:20. Just 33 seconds later, the Camels cut into the deficit again, as Siaki Nelson (Montgomery, Texas) made it a 4-2 game. The Sharks and Camels traded two goals apiece for the rest of the half, with Conn getting two markers from Cormac Stevens (Philadelphia, Pa.) to trail 6-4 at the half.
In the second half, Conn cut the deficit to one, as Jesse Ellis (Fresno, Calif.) made it 6-5. LIU pushed the lead back to three, with back-to-back goals, before a tally from Grant Archer (Miami, Fla.). The Sharks tallied two more goals in the frame, while Stevens completed his hat trick, as LIU led 10-7 heading to the fourth.
Two early goals for LIU pushed the advantage to 12-7. Conn answered quickly with a tally from Nelson, but his goal was canceled out by the Sharks. Stevens added three more goals, to cut the deficit to 13-11. With time running down LIU added one more goal to come away with the 14-11 victory.
Stevens led Conn with six goals, as Nelson recorded two, while Archer, Ellis, and Maischoss all added one.
Conn heads to Cambridge, Mass. for the Northeast Water Polo Conference Championship, as the Camels open the tournament against Harvard at 3 p.m. on Friday.
