Men's Basketball Cruises Past Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team remained unbeaten on the young season thanks to a 69-53 victory over Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Recreation Center.

The Camels stuck to a game plan that has proven to be effective this season—overpowering opponents with quick starts, balanced scoring and suffocating defense—to pick up their third straight win. Conn improved to 3-0 on the year and has yet to trail in the second half.

David Murray (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) led three Camels in double figures with 18 points on 9-for-10 shooting and added 10 rebounds to notch his first double-double of the season. Ben Rice (Hanson, Mass.) recorded his second straight double-double with 11 points and 10 boards, and RJ Casey (Brentwood, Tenn.) tacked on a season-high 12 points that included a pair of three-pointers.

The Camels, who finished with 14 steals and four blocks on the defensive end, dominated play under the basket. Conn finished with a 38-24 advantage on the glass and outscored RWU 48-20 in the paint.

Conn scored on the opening possession of the game and never yielded the lead. That basket sparked an 8-0 run that included a pair of buckets from Murray and fast-break layups by Casey and Cam Schainfeld (Newton, Mass.).

After the Hawks clawed back to within 12-11 at the 14-minute mark, Conn responded with 11 straight points to open up a double-digit lead. Five different Camels scored during the run, and the visitors later ended the half with a 37-25 advantage. Murray led all scorers with 10 points at the break and didn't miss a shot in the half.

Conn put the game to bed with an early 17-2 run in the second half and coasted to the finish. The Camels shot 8-for15 during the six-minute stretch while limiting the Hawks to 1-for-12 shooting. Murray led the way with six points during the spurt while Schainfeld chipped in four.

The Camels took their biggest lead of the game with 7:37 left when a layup by Rice made it 59-36. The big lead gave head coach Tim Sweeney the luxury of emptying his bench in the closing minutes.

Conn will play its home opener against Keene State College on Tuesday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m.
