Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 7 Men's Soccer Falls in Elite Eight to No. 18 Washington College (Md.) 1-0

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Connecticut College men's soccer team battled valiantly, but came up short, falling to No. 18 Washington College (Md.) in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon from Fredericksburg, Va. With the win, Washington College advances to the Final Four and improves to 14-2-6 on the year.

It was a slow start for both sides, as the teams opened the match feeling each other out. Washington (14-2-6) recorded the first shot of the contest 2:41 in, but Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) collected the ball. Conn (12-2-7) looked to break down the tough Shoremen defense, but could not generate much.

With just over 15 minutes remaining in the half, Washington was awarded a corner kick. On the ensuing corner, the ball was played in, and the initial shot was blocked, however, the rebound fell to Chris Comber who put it into the goal to put the Shoremen up 1-0. Neither side generated much for the remainder of the half as Washington led 1-0 at the break.

The Camels came out strong in the second half, looking to generate some offense, as Sam Boehm (Lexington, Mass.) recorded an early shot, but his effort went wide. Just two minutes later, Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) curled a shot to the near post, forcing a fantastic save from Anthony Pinto. With time running down the Camels upped the pressure looking for the equalizing goal.

With just over 16 minutes remaining earned back-to-back corner kicks. Both corners ended up in the box, but Conn was unable to convert, as they continued to trail 1-0. Jack Kelesoglu (Westfield, N.J.) had a good look at goal with three and a half minutes remaining, but his header went just wide of the near post. Ultimately, time ran out on the Camels, as Conn fell 1-0.

Conn outshot Washington 12-10 overall, but the Shoremen held a 6-5 edge on shots on goal, and a 7-6 advantage on corner kicks.

Silvester had a strong game in goal, finishing with five saves on six shots. Five Camels recorded one shot on goal, as Scoffone, Kelesoglu, Nate Pilson (Wilmington, Del.) Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.), and Maurice Pigola (Gorlitz, Germany) all had their shots saved.

Pinton earned the win in goal, stopping all five shots faced. Comber tallied the only goal of the contest, to lift the Shoremen to the victory.

Conn's season comes to a close, as the Camels finish with a 12-2-7 record, and the programs third ever appearance in the Elite Eight.
