NEW LONDON, Conn. – Connecticut College picked up a 3-1 victory over Mount Holyoke College in its regular season finale on Thursday night in non-conference women's volleyball action at Luce Field House.
The Camels won by set scores of 25-19, 25-17, 17-25 and 25-20 and improved to 12-11 on the season.
Emma Wheeler (Meredith, N.H.) turned in a team-high 13 kills and added six blocks to lead the way, and
Katherine Randall (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs while
Natasha Shrivastava (San Diego, Calif.) handed out 26 assists.
Lucie Berclaz paced the Lyons (11-15 overall) with a match-high 16 kills and added 11 digs.
Conn ripped off six straight points to grab a 6-1 lead in the opening set and played from in front the rest of the way. Wheeler supplied a pair of kills during the spurt, which also included a kill by Randall and a service ace by
Taylor Merrifield (Honolulu, Hawaii). Conn took its biggest lead at 14-8 following another kill by Wheeler, and later Merrifield added her second ace to help wrap up the set.
Randall paced the offense with seven kills on 14 swings in the second set as the Camels grabbed a 2-0 lead in the match. Conn overcame an early 3-0 deficit and took the lead for good behind a 4-0 run that included a pair of Wheeler aces and yielded a 10-8 advantage. The hosts later used a 9-2 spurt to pull away.
Mount Holyoke extended the match by bouncing back to take the third set. The Lyons held a 19-17 lead late and sealed the win by taking the final six points, with Kyra Staples recording a pair of aces during the stretch.
The Camels quickly recovered and vaulted out to an 8-1 lead on the serve of Merrifield in the fourth. Conn led by as many as nine before a late rally brought the Lyons back within striking distance. However, a block by
Riley Lord (Exeter, N.H.) and
Evie Lockwood Mullaney (Needham, Mass.) secured match point for the hosts, who finished with nine team blocks on the night.
Prior to the match, the Camels honored their four seniors in a special ceremony. Wheeler, Shrivastava,
Caroline Boyd (Stamford, Conn.) and
Valentina Baehrle (Redwood City, Calif.) all got starting nods in the final home game of their careers.
Conn College will next play at Amherst College in the first round of the NESCAC Championship on Friday, November 3 at 7:00 p.m.
