NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College men's water polo team celebrated senior day, falling to Division 1 Iona 16-7 on Thursday evening from Lott Natatorium. With the loss, Conn falls to 2-16 on the year.
Iona used a strong first quarter to open up an early lead against Conn (2-16). The Gaels tallied four goals in the opening frame to take a 4-0 advantage after one quarter of play. After two goals from Iona early in the second quarter, the Camels got on the board, thanks to a tally from Cormac Stevens (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 4:14 to play. The Gaels answered with the next goal, but Stevens tallied his second goal to cut the deficit to 7-2. Iona added one more goal late in the half to lead 8-2 at the break.
Once again, Iona opened the third quarter with two straight goals to extend the lead to 10-2. The Camels answered with back-to-back goals from Matthew Maischoss (Malibu, Calif.) and Jesse Ellis (Fresno, Calif.) to make it 10-4. Iona added two more goals in the frame, while Stevens completed his hat trick as Conn trailed 12–5 heading to the fourth quarter.
In the final quarter, the squads traded two goals apiece, as Iona pushed the lead to 14-7. For the Camels, Stevens recorded his fourth goal, while Ellis picked up his second of the contest. Iona tallied the final two goals of the match to come away with the 16-7 win.
Stevens led Conn with four goals, while Ellis added two, and Maischoss pitched in one goal.
Conn continues their busy weekend, taking on another Division 1 foe, hosting Fordham tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in Lott Natatorium.
