Men's Hockey Comes Up Short at Middlebury 3-2

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team dropped their first road contest of the year, falling to Middlebury College 3-2 on Friday night from Chip Kenyon Arena. With the loss, Conn falls to 0–4 on the year and 0-3 in conference play, while Middlebury improves to 1-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in NESCAC play.

Conn (0-4, 0-3) started quickly as Kareem Alazem (McLean, Va.) opened the scoring just 34 seconds into the contest, as Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H) and Jack Luca (Milton, Mass.) picked up the assists. Middlebury (1-2-2, 1-1-1) responded with their first shot, but Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.) was ready. The Camels controlled most of the play for the opening period, and late in the frame doubled the lead. With just over a minute remaining Cole Eichler (king, Ontario) found the twine to put Conn up 2-0. The Camels held on and led 2-0 after one.

Middlebury started the second period looking to get back into the game, but Dynan remained solid in goal. The teams traded shots for the majority of the period, but the Panthers found the net next. At 17:45, Revy Mack beat Dynan to cut the deficit in half. With time winding down in the period, Middlebury tied the game at two. A shot was taken from the point that was tipped by Andrey Hromic and fluttered over Dynan with one second remaining to send the game to the third tied at two.

Conn responded to giving up the late tying goal, by putting pressure on Middlebury in the early part of the frame, but could not find the go-ahead goal. The Panthers instead jumped ahead with just under minutes to play on a Matt Myers tally. The Camels pushed for the equalizer in the dying minutes, pulling Dynan for the extra attacker, but were unable to beat Jake Horoho, as Middlebury held on for the 3-2 win.

Conn outshoot Middlebury 26-23, while winning 36 of 59 face-offs.

Dynan got the start in goal, making 20 saves on 23 shots. Alazem and Eichler tallied the Camels goals, while Stadheim and Luca both added assists. Luca led the way with four shots on goal, while Alazem and Quinn Kennedy (Silver Spring, Md.) both notched three. John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) was strong in the face-off circle, winning 16 of 20 draws, with Stadheim winning nine of 15, while Conn went 0-2 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill.

Hororho earned the win in goal, stopping 24 of 26 shots. Mack led the Panthers with two points on one goal and one assist, while six others added one point. Middlebury won 23 of 59 draws, going 2-2 on the penalty kill and 0-1 on the power play.

Conn wraps up the weekend on the road, taking on Williams College at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow in Williamstown, Mass.
