Women's Hockey Downs Albertus Magnus 7-1 for Third Straight Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team closed out 2023 with their third straight win, taking down host Albertus Magnus 7-1, on Saturday morning from Ralph Walker Skating Rink. With the win, Conn improves to 5-3-1 on the year, while Albertus falls to 2-11-2.

Conn (5-3-1) jumped on the hosts early, opening up a 1-0 lead just 6:47 into the contest. Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) converted on the power play, while Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) and Kiley Smith (Marion, Mass.) picked up the assists. Just under six minutes later, the Camels doubled the lead, as Galen Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, Pa.) tallied her first career goal, with Casey Godfrey (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Ashley Engle (Basking Ridge, N.J.) earning assists. Conn held on and led 2-0 after one.

Albertus (2-11-2) cut the lead in half just 31 seconds into the second period, as Isabella Contrearas converted on the power play for the Falcons, making it 2-1. At 8:29, the two goal lead was restored for Conn, as Abby Munger (Trinity, Fla.) found the back of the net, with Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) and Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) picking up assists. Just three and a half minutes later, the Camels extended the lead to 4-1, on Jess Pistorino's (Charlestown, Mass.) first collegiate tally, as Conn headed into the third up 4-1.

Just over four minutes into the final frame, the Camels squashed any chance of a comeback scoring twice in 10 seconds. Sammons picked up her second power play goal of the contest, with Charlotte Harris (Ystrad Mynach, Wales) and Munger earning assists at 4:28, before Miyu Miyazaki (Chiba, Japan) tallied at 4:38 to make it 6-1. The Camels added one more goal with just over three minutes remaining, as Cresta scored shorthanded, allowing Conn to come away with the 7-1 victory.

Conn outshot Albertus 54-6, while winning 35 of 57 face-offs.

Jillian Wexler (Plainsboro, N.J.) earned the win in goal, making five saves on six shots. Seven Camels recorded multi-point games, led by Munger who notched three points on one goal and two assists, while Sammons added two goals, with Cresta and Kilfeather recording a goal and an assist, and Burm, Harris, and Engle all added two assists. Munger also led the way with eight shots, while Sammons and Kylie McCarthy (Dedham, Mass.) both notched six. Sammons won 12 of 18 draws, as Conn went 2 for 6 on the power play and 3-4 on the penalty kill, with a shorthanded marker.

Christmas Johnson got the start in goal, making 43 saves on 49 shots in 44:38 of action, before being replaced by Sarah Hoffman, who finished the game with four saves on five shots. Contreras tallied the lone Falcon goal, while Albertus went 4-6 on the penalty kill and 1-4 on the power play.

Conn returns to action in the new year, hosting Wesleyan in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, at 3:00 p.m. at Dayton Arena.
