Women's Ice Hockey Falls To No. 6 Hamilton 3-1

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team dropped a NESCAC matchup to No. 6 Hamilton 3-1 on Friday night at Dayton Arena.

Nancy Loh scored two goals to propel the visitors to a victory, snapping a four-game win streak for the Camels. The triumph extends Hamilton's unbeaten streak to eight in a row and the team has not been defeated since January 13.

In the opening frame, the Continentals were able to get on the scoreboard first. Defender Abby Kuhns took a shot from just inside the blue line. While the puck was on its way toward the net, teammate Claire McGennis deflected the wrist shot, changing its trajectory, sending it into the back of the net. Despite an evenly played stanza, the visitors carried the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

At the 4:15 mark of the second period, the Camels found the equalizer. Senior Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) scored her 13th goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Caroline O'Keefe (Winthrop, Mass.) took a pass and skated behind the net in the Continentals defensive zone. The senior dished it to her classmate in the slot, who fired a wrister beating Hamilton goaltender Evie Sheridan.

But later on in the period, the visitors regained the lead. Loh added to her NESCAC-leading goal total after skating past a pair of defenders and beating goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) with a backhanded shot, putting Hamilton back up a score with one period remaining.

With 20 minutes left in the contest, the Camels searched for the game-tying goal. Their best chance came on the power play with six minutes remaining. The hosts peppered the net with shot attempts, but Sheridan and the Continentals defense were able to kill off the opportunity to maintain the one-goal advantage.

In the waning moments of the period, Conn pulled Wieczorek to utilize the extra attacker, but Loh intercepted a pass near mid-ice and was able to put in the empty-netter to seal the 3-1 victory for the visitors.

Sheridan earned the win for Hamilton, stopping 24 shots. Wieczorek allowed a pair of goals and made 25 saves for the Camels. Both teams played a clean game, only committing one penalty each.
As of Friday night, Hamilton sits in second place in the conference, while the loss bumped the Camels down to fifth place.

Connecticut College (12-8-1 overall, 6-6-1 NESCAC) will host the Continentals again tomorrow at Dayton Arena. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m.
