Colby Edges Women's Ice Hockey In Regular Season Finale

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team was edged by Colby 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kelley Rink.

Meg Rittenhouse scored for the Mules in the third period to propel the hosts to victory. With the win, Colby completed the weekend sweep of the Camels and will head into the NESCAC tournament riding a five-game win streak.

The hosts got on the scoreboard just three minutes into the opening period. Audrey Shirer skated up ice into the Camels defensive zone and took a wrister from the right face-off circle. The puck was partially deflected by Conn goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.), but the effort was in vain, as the shot caromed off the post and into the back of the net to make it 1-0 in favor of Colby.

At the 6:41 mark, the Camels were able to even the score. Kelly Matthews (Abington, Mass.) stole the puck off a falling Mules defender near the blue line. All by herself and with one defender to beat, Matthews expertly used a deke to get into the slot and then fired a wrist shot through the legs of Colby goaltender Paige Bolyard to tie the game at 1-1.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the second period. Colby slightly edged Conn 6-5 in shots on goal. Both squads killed off one power play opportunity each to keep the game even heading into the final stanza.

On the opening face-off of the third period, Colby was able to tally the game-winner. Following a scramble for a loose puck, Rittenhouse somehow broke through a pack of Camels' players and skated into the slot and put a back-handed shot past Wieczorek to put the Mules up for good.

For the remainder of the period, the visitors searched for the equalizer. In the final two minutes, the Camels pulled Wieczorek from net to utilize the extra attacker. Conn's offense peppered the net with shots and displayed major offensive pressure, but Bolyard was able to thwart the attempts to seal the 2-1 victory.

Wieczorek stopped 21 shots in net, while Bolyard picked up the victory with 22 saves. Both teams had multiple power play attempts. Colby was 0-2 on its chances, while the Camels could not convert on three opportunities.

Connecticut College (12-11-1 overall, 6-9-1 NESCAC) will next play in the NESCAC quarterfinals on Saturday, February 25 against an opponent to be named after all regular season competition has been completed.
