PASADENA, Calif. – The Connecticut College women's water polo team dropped a 19-11 decision at the California Institute of Technology on Tuesday evening at Braun Pool.

The Camels hung close until midway through the third quarter, when Caltech snapped a 9-9 deadlock with five straight goals to seize control. The Beavers improved to 4-6 overall on the season while Conn dropped to 2-2.

Gigi Sandull (Kenilworth, N.J.) and Emma Luna (Wahiawa, Hawaii) paced Conn with three goals apiece while Melia Lorch (Encinitas, Calif.) added two goals. Maria Sell (San Mateo, Calif.) finished with a goal and three assists while also logging time in goal.

Caltech built a 2-0 lead before Luna put the Camels on the scoreboard with 4:26 left in the first. The Camels played from behind for most of the first half, eventually pulling even at 6-6 following three straight scores late in the second period. After a goal by Lorch tied the game at 7-7, the Beavers squeezed out a power play goal at the end of the half to lead by one at the break.

Sandull netted a pair of goals early in the second half—the first on a power play, and the second on a penalty shot—as the Camels evened the score at 9-9. However, the final 12 minutes of the match belonged to the hosts, as the Beavers scored 10 of the final 12 goals to secure the victory.

Sell contributed three saves in goal while Sarah Franco (Weston, Conn.) chipped in four and Yiota Tsiali (Varvara, Greece) had one.

Conn College wraps up its West Coast swing against Chapman University on Wednesday, March 15 at 7:00 p.m. EST.
