Women's Lax Cruises to 16-6 Win Over Merchant Marine

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. -- The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team coasted to a 16-6 win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) on Tuesday evening at the Spring Fling Women's Lacrosse Tournament in Panama City Beach, Fla.

Sophomore Aine Downey (Brookline, Mass.) led the Camels with two goals and two assists, while teammates Emily Yorns (Longmeadow, Mass.), Elizabeth Gill (Hingham, Mass.), and Suzie Smith (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) each tallied three points.

Conn got off to a hot start and never looked back. The Camels outscored the Mariners 6-0 during the opening quarter. Sophomore Emma Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.) opened the scoring spree with a goal within the first two minutes. Downey and Kate Coughlin (Reading, Mass.) followed up with a pair of goals each to extend the lead to 5-0. Gill capped off the impressive first stanza with a score to raise the Conn advantage to six goals.

The second quarter was much more evenly matched. After the Camels opened up the period with scores from Smith and Caroline Bruce (Acton, Mass.), the Mariners tallied three of the contest's next four goals to cut into the lead. But Smith added her second score to stop the run. The Camels would carry the 10-3 lead heading into the second half.

The Mariners looked to continue off their successful second quarter and found success early in the third on a score by Kaitlyn Latchaw, but the Camels rattled off three consecutive goals to truly put the game out of reach. Gill, Janet Howard (Madison, Conn.) and Bruce were credited with scores to wrap up the third quarter.

It was more of the same in the final frame. Although the Mariners were able to tally two more scores, the Camels put four in the back of the net to conclude the dominant 16-6 victory.

Goaltender Violette Nidds (Ridgewood, N.J.) earned the win, stopping six shots, while also accumulating six ground balls.

Connecticut College (3-1 overall, 0-1 NESCAC) will return to conference play at home on March 18 against Hamilton.
