Women's Lacrosse Downs Smith 13-5

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Emily Yorns (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored five goals to propel the Connecticut College women's lacrosse team to a 13-5 win over Smith College on Wednesday evening at Silfen Field.

With the victory, the Camels improved to 2-0 on the season and have outscored their opponents 33-7 during that span.

After a back-and-forth defensive battle for the majority of the first quarter, Yorns got the hosts on the board with a free-position goal with six minutes left in the stanza. Four minutes later, first year Kate Coughlin (Reading, Mass.) also capitalized on an eight-meter shot to put the Camels up 2-0. Junior Julianna Ingrassia (Garden City, N.Y.) capped off the scoring effort in the first with an unassisted goal to extend the lead to 3-0 heading into the second quarter.

During the 15 minutes before halftime, the home team broke the game open. The Camels opened the period with six consecutive goals including three more from Yorns and an additional score from Coughlin. Emma Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.) added the other tally to extend the lead to 9-0.

Smith finally got on the scoreboard in the waning moments of the first half on a goal from Reese Gittelman, but Conn would hold the eight-score advantage heading into the break.

The visitors tightened up the contest in the third quarter. Following an early score from Ingrassia, the Pioneers rattled off three consecutive goals in a three minute span to cut the Camels' lead to 10-4.

Sophomore Aine Downey (Brookline, Mass.) stopped the run with a free-position goal to put Conn back up 11-4 at the end of the quarter.

During the final frame, the two teams exhibited staunch defensive efforts. The Pioneers scored with just over six minutes to play, but Conn responded with two goals of its own from Yorns and Caroline Bruce (Acton, Mass.) to cap off the 13-5 victory.

The hosts dominated in draw controls, triumphing in 18-of-22. Downey cracked double-digits, registering 10 wins for the Camels. Junior defender Caroline Barbieri (Longmeadow, Mass.) led the team with three caused turnovers, and tallied two ground balls in the winning effort.

Goaltender Violette Nidds (Ridgewood, N.J.) earned the victory for Conn, stopping six shots. Teammate Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) relieved Nidds in net, making three saves while only allowing a single score.

Conn College (2-0 overall) will be back in action on Saturday on the road against Middlebury.
