Men's LAX Tops Bates 17-6

Rainville's 10-point day leads Camels

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Connecticut College turned in a dominant second quarter en route to a 17-6 victory over Bates College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC men's lacrosse showdown held at Mitchell College.

Jared Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) enjoyed a career day with five goals and five assists for a game-high 10 points. JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) also tacked on a hat trick, and Jack Tenzer (Charlotte, N.C.) and Liam Horkan (Malden, Mass.) added two goals apiece as the Camels (5-6 overall, 3-5 NESCAC) matched their highest scoring output of the season.

Will Masterson (York, Maine) paced Bates with three goals and an assist. The Bobcats dropped to 1-11 overall and 0-9 in league play.

Masterson spotted Bates the early lead with a pair of goals in the opening 3:01 of the contest. Goalie Drew Nyus (Lake Oswego, Ore.) protected the lead until late in the period, turning away Conn's first three shots on goal. Rainville finally broke through with 3:42 left, and less than two minutes later he fed Colter Lingelbach-Pierce (Etna, N.H.) for the game-tying score.

Conn's offense stayed hot in the second, scoring five straight goals to build a 7-2 lead. The Camels carried an extra-man advantage into the period, and Ford capitalized with his first of the day to put the hosts on top for good. Horkan added another EMO goal later in the quarter, and back-to-back tallies by Rainville capped the 7-0 run.

Masterson supplied a goal and an assist in the final 4:59 of the half, but the Bobcats couldn't make up any ground. The Camels matched the output with scores from Tenzer and Nick McLaughlin (Wilbraham, Mass.) and carried a 9-4 lead into halftime.

Conn outscored Bates by an 8-2 margin in the second half to seal the victory. Rainville notched his final two goals early in the half and later assisted on two more, including the first career goal for classmate and fellow captain Brandon Allen (Chantilly, Va.) with 4:24 left.

Will Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) played all but the final 4:07 in goal for the Camels and finished with 11 saves. Will Vivian (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Mike Delhome (Belmont, Mass.) also saw limited action late and did not face any shots on goal.

The Camels finished the day with a 48-33 edge in total shots and killed off all five of their penalties. Aidan Gaudet (Cheshire, Conn.) went 15-for-20 on faceoffs and scooped up six ground balls.

Conn College will next play at Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday, April 18 at 6:00 p.m.
