NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Seniors
Jeffrey Love (Union, N.J.) and
Chris Verstandig (Slingerlands, N.Y.), and first year
Jonathan Norton (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) all won individual events to lead the Connecticut College men's track & field team to a runner-up result at the Silfen Invitational over the weekend. The Camels concluded the two-day home event with nine top-five finishes en route to 92 team points.
The Camels improved upon last year's seventh place finish with a second place outcome in the program's lone home event. Springfield took home the team title with 152 total points. Trinity, Bridgewater State, and New Haven rounded out the top five.
Love triumphed in the 10k, crossing the line 29:48.90, a new personal-best for the senior. The time currently ranks as the 13th-fastest in all of Division III this season. Classmate
Matt Carter (Manchester, Mass.) finished as the runner-up, completing an impressive one-two punch for the Camels. Carter clocked in at 30:19.54, a time that also ranks in the top-20 nationally.
Verstandig continued his outstanding spring campaign with a victory in the 800. The senior registered a time of 1:54.56 which is a new personal-best. As a result of the first-place finish, Conn earned 10 team points.
Norton also emerged victorious in his lone event of the weekend. The first year topped the field in the 3000-meter steeplechase on his home track. Norton crossed the line in 9:29.59, while teammate
Matt Scardigno (Port Washington, N.Y.) was right behind, placing third overall in the event.
Junior
Chris Koskinen (Yarmouth, Maine) performed well in the decathlon, finishing as the runner-up. Koskinen took first in the 400, 1,500, and pole vault while placing second in the 110-meter hurdles. The junior tallied 5,399 total points in the event, breaking Nick Fischetti's school record of 5,364 set back in 2016.
Sophomore
Harry Harwood (Woodbury, Conn.) also placed second in the 1,500, finishing in 3:55.42, just .08 seconds behind Colby's Hayden Bailey.
Jayson Firmin (Dedham, Mass.) recorded a top-five finish in the triple jump, placing fourth with a distance of 13.22 meters. Firmin also participated in the 4x100 relay with teammates
Dylan Haime (Bronx, N.Y.),
Francisco Moreira (Belchertown, Mass.) and
Faiz Aladin (Palo Alto, Calif.). The quartet also finished fourth overall with a time of 43.42.
Connecticut College will be back in action next weekend for a meet at Trinity.
