Women's Lax Downs Bates For First NESCAC Win

LEWISTON, Maine – Senior Hailey Fahey (Norwich, Vt.) and first year Kate Coughlin (Reading, Mass.) combined for six goals to propel the Connecticut College women's lacrosse team to its first NESCAC win of the season. The Camels took down the Bobcats 13-10 on Saturday thanks in part to a strong offensive approach in which the visitors outscored the hosts throughout the first three quarters.

The victory was Conn's first on the road against Bates since 2010 and second consecutive triumph over the Bobcats overall. The win keeps the Camels' NESCAC playoffs hopes alive as they now sit in the ninth spot in the conference standings with a game against eighth-place Bowdoin next weekend.

The Camels started hot out of the gates and never looked back, scoring the first four goals of the contest. Senior Emily Yorns (Longmeadow, Mass.) started the spree, followed by back-to-back scores from first year Elizabeth Gill (Hingham, Mass.). Coughlin found the back of the net for her first goal to put the visitors up 4-0 early on.

The Bobcats responded with two consecutive free-position scores to cut into the deficit at the conclusion of the opening frame.

In the second, the hosts picked up where they left off, scoring less than one minute into the quarter to slice the Camels' lead to 4-3.

But the visitors remained calm and were able to take back the momentum when Fahey netted her first goal to regain the two-score advantage. Sophomore Greta Panke (Milldale, Conn.) capitalized off a free-position attempt with 7:19 left in the quarter to make it 6-3. The two teams buckled down defensively for the second half of the stanza. While the Bobcats only allowed one shot, on the other end, Camels' goaltender Violette Nidds (Ridgewood, N.J.) made three crucial saves to hold the lead heading into the halftime break.

The two teams traded goals coming out of the intermission. First, Campbell Johnston (Duxbury, Mass.) earned a tally in the score column off an assist from Coughlin. Then, Bates found the back of the net on a score from Caroline Taggart.

The Camels outscored the Bobcats 3-1 for the remainder of the period, including a clutch goal in the last minute by Fahey. The visitors would carry a 10-5 lead heading into the final frame.

Bates came out firing in the fourth, scoring three goals in less than three minutes to cut the deficit to 10-8. But once again, the Camels found a way to right the ship, and responded with a trio of scores from Fahey, Coughlin and Yorns.

Up by five goals with less than two minutes left to play, it seemed like an easy coast to the final whistle for Conn. But the Bobcats showed resiliency, scoring back-to-back goals in 30 seconds to make it a 15-12 game. The hosts won the ensuing draw control and attempted a shot in the waning moments, but Nidds saved it to seal the victory for the Camels.

With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 5-9 overall and 1-8 in NESCAC play.

Nidds earned the win for the visitors picking up seven saves. Bates goaltender Cammie Lavoie stopped five shots in the losing effort. First year Brogan Holbrough (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded a game-high four ground balls. Coughlin and Yorns led the Camels with four points each.

Connecticut College (5-7 overall, 1-7 NESCAC) will return to action on April 22 for the final home game of the season against Bowdoin.
