4/23/2023 4:51:00 PM

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Fifth-seeded Macalester College used a strong second half to hand second-seeded Connecticut College a 13-4 setback on Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the 2023 CWPA Division III Championship at Riley Pool.

The Scots outscored the Camels 10-1 after the break to secure a third-place finish in the tournament. Eleanor Michaud netted three of her game-high four goals in the second half to pace Macalester, which improved to 8-11 overall.

Emma Luna (Wahiawa, Hawaii) factored into all four goals for the Camels, finishing with a goal and three assists. The Conn first year recorded a team-best eight goals and four assists over three games, earning Rookie of the Tournament honors and a spot on the all-tournament team. Classmate Gigi Sandull (Kenilworth, N.J.), who joined Luna on the all-tournament team, also tallied a goal in the finale.

After falling behind 2-0 in the opening 2:16, the Camels cut the deficit in half on a tally by Maria Sell (San Mateo, Calif.) with 5:27 left in the first. The Scots took the 2-1 lead into the second quarter, only to see Conn pull even behind a goal by Melia Lorch (Encinitas, Calif.) just 50 seconds into the period.

Michaud put Macalester on top once again with her first goal with 4:16 left in the half. However, the Scots couldn't hold the advantage, as a goal by Luna tied the score heading into intermission.

The Scots netted the first three goals of the second half and never looked back. Conn's lone score came from Sandull with 2:03 to go in the third, but from that point on it was all Macalester. The tournament hosts scored the game's final seven goals en route to the victory.

Sarah Franco (Weston, Conn.) made five saves in goal for the Camels before turning things over to Yiota Tsiali (Varvara, Greece) in the fourth quarter. Tsiali finished with one stop.

Conn finished the season with an overall record of 10-9 (7-1 CWPA-East). The Camels will lose only two players to graduation and are set to return 13 letter winners next season.
