Women's Lax Concludes 2023 Campaign With Loss To Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team fell to No. 5 Wesleyan on Wednesday evening at Smith Field. The Cardinals topped the Camels 14-2 to wrap up the 2023 regular season.

Wesleyan (13-2 overall, 8-2 NESCAC) utilized a balanced offensive attack, featuring goals from 11 different players to secure the second seed in the upcoming NESCAC tournament.

Conn concludes its 2023 campaign just short of a postseason berth. The Camels earned its lone NESCAC victory on April 15 against Bates. The team finished with a 5-9 overall record, going undefeated in non-conference contests.

On Wednesday night, Wesleyan hopped out to a commanding 6-0 lead after the opening frame and never looked back.

After adding three more goals to begin the second quarter, the Camels were able to get on the scoreboard when first year Kate Coughlin (Reading, Mass.) found the back of the net off an assist from classmate Elizabeth Gill (Hingham, Mass.).

The Cardinals continued to add to their lead in the second half, going on a 5-0 scoring run in the third and fourth quarters.

With less than one minute left in the contest, Janet Howard (Madison, Conn.) scored off a free-position attempt to give the visitors its second and final goal.

Conn goaltender Violette Nidds (Ridgewood, N.J.) stopped four shots in net. Wesleyan played three goalies who made a combined eight saves. Weber and defender Caroline Barbieri (Longmeadow, Mass.) each recorded a game-high four ground balls in the loss.

Coughlin ended her first collegiate season as the team leader in goals with 30. Sophomore Aine Downey (Brookline, Mass.) tallied 15 assists in only 12 games. Senior Abigail Gleeson-Feldman (Nanuet, N.Y.) was the team's top defender registering 26 ground balls and a team-high 19 caused turnovers.

Connecticut College (5-9 overall, 1-9 NESCAC) graduates four seniors and returns over 20 players with varsity experience.
