Field Hockey Picks Up 1-0 Win at Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Connecticut College field hockey team picked up a 1-0 victory at Smith College on Wednesday night in a non-conference match-up at Smith Turf Field.

Following three scoreless quarters, the Camels finally secured the game-winning goal early in the fourth off a penalty corner. Kylee Quinn (Sandwich, Mass.) notched her first goal of the season to put Conn on top, and the Camels didn't allow a shot the rest of the way to sew up the win.

Goalie Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) made the one-goal margin stand up, recording a pair of stops in the cage to pick up her second shutout of the year. Conn dominated in all facets of the game, finishing with advantages in shots (12-4), shots on goal (8-2) and penalty corners (9-1).

Quinn's goal, which came with 13:57 left in the contest, was the result of a beautiful set play on the penalty corner. Abby Krahmer (Duxbury, Mass.) inserted the ball to the top of the circle, where it was stopped and set up by Chloe Therrien (Boxford, Mass.). Quinn then took one touch to her right before ripping a low shot that snuck inside the right post. Smith goalie Abby Halpin, who finished with six saves in the game, never had a chance.

Conn's defense was locked in from the start, limiting Smith to only two shots in each half. Winemaster was challenged twice in the third quarter but kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard.

Conn (2-3 overall) will next host Amherst College on Wednesday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m.
