Field Hockey Hangs Tough With No. 7 Babson

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team opened the 2023 season with a 3-1 setback against No. 7 Babson College on Tuesday evening at Silfen Field.

Camille Marsh (Englewood, Colo.) scored a pair of fourth-quarter goals—including the game winner—as the Beavers improved to 2-0 on the season. Meara Hanyon (Brodheadsville, Pa.) also tacked on a goal while Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) made the margin stand in goal.

Conn's lone goal came off the stick of Bridget Mason (East Greenwich, R.I.) in the second half. Goalie Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) kept the Camels in the game with 11 stops in her collegiate debut.

Babson got on the scoreboard with 5:02 remaining in the opening quarter on a penalty shot by Hanyon. Winemaster turned away four other shots on goal in the period, and the Camels trailed just 1-0 heading into the second.

Conn nearly tied the game in the opening minute of the second quarter, as Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) slotted a pass through the Babson back line that found Abby Krahmer (Duxbury, Mass.) open for a clear look at the goal. However, her shot to the near post was turned away by Furmanek, and neither team managed a goal the rest of the half.

The score remained 1-0 until late in the third period, when the Camels tied the game at the 1:14 mark on a play that was set up by McGann. She picked up a loose ball inside the circle and dribbled toward goal, pulling up short once met by the Babson defense. After a couple of spins, she sent a backhanded flick to the far post, where Mason was waiting to redirect the ball out of mid-air for the score.

Marsh was the difference in the fourth, scoring a pair of goals within a six-minute span to secure the win for the visitors. Her first tally came off a broken pass, where she corralled a loose ball and blistered a shot into the back of the cage with 12:13 remaining. Moments later, with Conn playing down a player, she added an insurance marker with 6:50 to go.

Conn (0-1 overall) will next host No. 6 Tufts University on Saturday, September 9 at noon.
