Men's Soccer Opens the Season With a 6-0 Victory Over Hartford

HARTFORD, Conn – The Connecticut College Men's Soccer team kicked off the 2023 season on the right foot, picking up a 6-0 victory over the University of Hartford on Tuesday afternoon.

Conn (1-0) started quickly, firing off the first four shots of the contest inside the opening seven minutes, including a hit post by Rye Jaran (Downingtown, Pa) but the Camels came up empty. After Hartford (0-1) recorded their first shot at 7:14, Conn opened the scoring as Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa) collected the rebound off a Samuel Brockelman (Topsfield, Mass) shot to put the Camels up 1-0 at 11:53.

Conn continued to dominate play throughout the first half, hemming the Hawks in their own half for most of the opening 45 minutes. Following the opening goal from Scoffone, Conn recorded the final 11 shots of the period, to hold a 17-1 shot advantage, including 6-0 on shots on goal, while holding a 5-0 edge on corner kicks.

The second half started much like the first half, as the Camels continued their barrage on the Hawks cage as Brockelman extended the lead to 2-0 at 46:32, as Gavin Vanden Berg (Lake Forest Park, Wash.) picked up the assist. Four minutes later, Scoffone added his second tally of the game, with Matt Quiros-Newton (Alajuela, Costa Rica) earning the assist.

Conn doubled the lead over a span of eight minutes, as Jake Creus (Rye, N.Y.) scored an unassisted tally at 78:35, before adding a second goal just under five minutes later, this time off an assist from Christian Perugini (Medway, Mass.). Sam Boehm (Lexington, Mass.) rounded out the scoring, as Creus picked up the assist at 84:21.

The Camels dominated in every facet of the game, outshooting the Hawks 36-2 overall and 18-1 on shots on goal. Additionally, Conn was awarded 10 corner kicks, while Hartford did not get any.

Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) picked up the win between the sticks facing just a single shot, while Casey Shea came on in relief, making his collegiate debut over the final 32 minutes, making one save. Creus led the offense, tallying five points on two goals and one assist, Scoffone added four points on two goals, while Brockelman and Boehm both recorded a goal, and Quiros-Newton, Vanden Berg, and Perugini all notched an assist.

The Camels return to Harkness Field for the first time in the new season, hosting No. 25 Tufts University in the NESCAC opener at 2:00 p.m.
