NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's swimming and diving team suffered its first head-to-head setback of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling by a 188.5-105.5 final against No. 17 Williams College at Lott Natatorium.
The Camels hung tough early, posting three wins and a pair of runner-up finishes through the first six events of the meet. However, the Ephs' depth eventually proved too much, and the visitors improved to 3-0 on the year in dual meets.
Conn posted a total of five wins and four runner-up finishes on the day.
Justin Finkel (Cheshire, Conn.) and
Matthew Morris (Alexandria, Va.) each supplied a pair of wins,
Evan Lyons (Longmeadow, Mass.) contributed one, and
Matthew Laclef (Bethesda, Md.) nabbed a pair of runner-up places.
The Camels opened the meet with a second-place showing in the 200 medley relay. The team of Morris,
Patrick Henry (Livonia, Mich.),
Gabe Frank (Northbrook, Ill.) and Finkel finished six-tenths of a second behind the top squad from Williams.
In the second event, Lyons and Laclef dominated the 1,650 free. Lyons was the first to the wall in 16:00.21—a full 32 seconds ahead of the fastest Williams competitor—while Laclef took second in 16:17.80.
Morris picked up his first win of the meet in the 100 back (50.61), and Finkel followed suit with a commanding swim in the 200 fly (1:48.76). Morris later added his second victory in the 200 back (1:50.96) ahead of Laclef, and Finkel edged Williams' Ryan Nunez by one-tenth of a second to win the 500 free (4:36.87).
Prior to the meet, the Camels honored Laclef,
Jamie Amell (West Hartford, Conn.) and
Will Nash (Chatham, N.J.) in a special ceremony. The three seniors were competing in the final home meet of their careers.
Conn will next compete at Amherst College on Saturday, January 27 at 1:00 p.m.
