MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team hit the road, falling to No. 6 Middlebury 3-1 on Friday night from Chip Kenyon Arena. With the loss, Conn falls to 6-7-5 and 2-7-2 in NESCAC play, while Middlebury improves to 9-3-3 and 6-1-2 in conference play.
Middlebury (9-3-3, 6-1-2 NESCAC) started quickly, jumping out to a 1-0 lead just 1:34 into the contest off a goal from Jordan Hower. Conn (6-7-5, 2-7-2 NESCAC) responded with the next three shots. The Camels ended the period strong looking for the tying goal, but trailed 1-0 after one.
The teams traded shots over the opening three minutes, before Conn was awarded a power play. On the ensuing advantage, the Camels tied the game as Kylie McCarthy's (Dedham, Mass.) shot found the net, with Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) picking up the assist. Both sides looked to take the lead, but neither side found the go-ahead goal. However, with just over a minute left in the period, the Panthers jumped back in front off a tally from Kylie Quinlan, to take a 2-1 edge into the third period.
Middlebury extended the lead at 5:42 on a power play marker. Kate Flynn's shot found the back of the net, as the Panthers led 3-1. Conn looked to get back into the game, but Middlebury's defense kept them at bay. With just over two minutes remaining, the Camels pulled goaltender Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) for the extra attacker. With the extra skater on, Conn recorded three shots, but were unable to find the net, falling 3-1.
Conn outshot Middlebury 24-23, while the Panthers held a 22-18 edge on face-off wins.
Galizio got the start in goal, finishing with 20 saves on 23 shots. McCarthy tallied the lone goal, while Chesner added an assist. Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) led the way with six shots on goal, while Abby Munger (Trinity, Fla.) blocked three shots. Casey Godfrey (Redondo Beach, Calif.) won six face-offs, as Conn went 1-3 on the power play and 1-2 on the penalty kill.
Sophia Will got the nod in net, stopping 23 of 24 shots. Liv Fernandex paced the Panthers with two assists, while seven others added one point. Middlebury finished the evening going 2-3 on the penalty kill and 1-2 on the power play.
Conn wraps up the weekend series with No. 6 Middlebury tomorrow afternoon, with puck drop set for 3:00 p.m.
