Strong Second Half Propels Men's Soccer Past Coast Guard 3-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's soccer team made the short trek to the United States Coast Guard Academy, defeating the host Bears 3-0 on Tuesday night from Nitchman Field. With the win, Conn improves to 6-1-4, while Coast Guard falls to 9-3-1.

It was an entertaining opening 45 minutes, as Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) forced a save just over a minute into the contest. Coast Guard 10 minutes later with back-to-back shots on net, but Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) turned both away.

A few minutes later, Silvester came up with another save to keep the game scoreless. With just under 16 minutes remaining in the first half, Conn had the best chance to break the deadlock, but Jake Creus (Madrid, Spain) rang a shot off the crossbar. Neither side was able to find the opening tally, as the game was scoreless at the break.

The action picked up right where it left out to start the second half, as the Bears were awarded a penalty kick just three and a half minutes in. Micah Messner stepped up, but Silvester answered the bell, coming up with a huge save. Just a minute and 15 seconds later, the Camels broke the ice. Rye Jaran (Downingtown, Pa.) connected with Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) who fired high into the net to make it 1-0.

Just three minutes later, Conn had a golden opportunity to double the lead, as this time it was the Camels who were awarded a penalty kick. Gavin Mpiana (Cape Town, South Africa) stepped up to the spot and buried the shot, making it 2-0 Conn. With four and a half minutes left, the Camels picked up a third goal, as Mpiana facilitated this time, feeding Scoffone who fired low into the net to give Conn the 3-0 win.

Conn outshot Coast Guard 28-11 overall, including 9-6 on shots on target, while also holding a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Silvester was fantastic in goal, recording six saves, including a penalty kick. Mpiana paced the Camels with three points on one goal and one assist, while both Perugini and Scoffoned added one goal, with Jaran notching an assist.

John Putnam recorded six saves in goal for the Bears, while Jake Fish led the way with four total shots and three on target.

Conn returns to action on Saturday to host Bates College for senior day at 2:30 p.m. on Freeman Field.
