BALTIMORE, Md. – The Connecticut College men's water polo team headed to Baltimore, Md. to compete in the 2024 CWPA Division 3 Eastern Championships, going 1-3 against Austin, Washington and Jefferson, MIT, and Johns Hopkins. With the results, Conn moves to 5-11 on the year.
Game 1: Austin 11, Conn 10
Austin opened the game with a strong first quarter, outscoring Conn 5-2 in the opening frame. The teams traded the first two goals, with Jesse Ellis (Fresno, Calif.) connecting for the Camels. The Roos ended the frame on a 4-1 run with Cormac Stevens (Philadelphia, Pa.) tallying for Conn. After an early goal for Austin in the second quarter, made it 6-2, Conn answered with the final two goals of the half from Thomas McDonough (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Stevens to trail 6-4 at the break.
The Roos opened the second half with the first two goals, pushing the lead to 8-4, before Ethan Hipsky (Glastonbury, Conn.) answered for the Camels. Austin continued with the next two goals, extending the lead to 10-5, but Conn ended the quarter with two straight markers, from Hipsky and Jeffrey Harrington (San Diego, Calif.) had the Camels trailing 10-7 heading to the fourth. Austin opened the final frame with a goal to extend the lead to 11-7. Conn answered with three goals from Ellis, McDonough, and Stevens to make it 11-10 with 17 seconds left. However, time ran out on the Camels, falling 11-10.
Game 2: Conn 14, W&J 8
Conn responded in the second game of day one, this time against Washington and Jefferson. The first quarter was even, as both teams tallied three goals. For Conn, Ellis scored twice, while Harrington added the third. The Camels used a strong second quarter to go in front for good. McDonough scored early in the frame, before Harrington made it 5-3. The Presidents cut it to 5-4, but back-to-back goals from Ellis and Harrington had Conn on top 7-4 at the half.
Harrington continued his strong game, opening the second half with the first goal, making it 8-4. Two straight goals from W&J cut the deficit in half, before a late goal from Keegan Kosiba (Birmingham, Mich.), had Conn leading 9-6 heading to the fourth. The Camels pushed the lead to 11-6, on two markers from McDonough before the Presidents answered with a goal. Conn ended the game on a 3-1 run, with tallies from Ellis, Harrington, and Paul Podrebarac (Friendswood, Texas), as Conn came away with the 14-8 win.
Game 3: MIT 16, Conn 7
MIT started the third game strong, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. However, Conn answered with a goal from Kosiba and Stevens to trail 3-2 after one. The Engineers responded to start the second quarter, using a 4-1 run to make it 7-3, with the lone goal during the run for the Camels came from Stevens. Harrington notched a tally late in the frame, as Conn trailed 7-4 at the break.
Stevens made it a two goal game early in the third quarter, before MIT reeled off a 5-0 run, to push the lead to 12-5. Conn answered with a late goal in the period from Ellis, as the Camels trailed 12-7 heading to the fourth. The Engineers used a 4-1 run in the final frame, with the lone Camel goal coming from Hipsky, as Conn fell 16-7
Game 4: Johns Hopkins 15, Conn 10
Conn opened up the final game taking an early 1-0 lead, Stevens put Conn in front. Johns Hopkins answered, with the other two goals of the opening frame, leading 2-1 after the first. The Blue Jays continued the run to start the second quarter, extending the lead to 4-1. Stevens answered with back-to-back markers, making it 4-3. Hopkins outscored Conn 5-1 over the rest of the quarter, as Stevens tallied the only Camels goal, as the Blue Jays led 9-4 at the break.
Conn used a strong third quarter to cut into the deficit. Steven and Harrington combined for four goals, while Hopkins scored just two goals, as Conn trailed 11-8 heading to the fourth. Ellis scored 19 seconds into the final frame to make it 11-9, before the teams traded a goal apiece, with a second from Ellis, to put Hopkins up 12-10. However, the Blue Jays recorded the last three goals of the game, to come away with the 15-10 win.
Conn returns to action on Wednesday, as the Camels travel to Norton, Mass. to take on Wheaton at 7:00 p.m.
