NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's soccer team closed out the regular season, falling to visiting Wesleyan 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon from Freeman Field. With the draw, Conn falls to 8-2-5 overall and 3-2-5 in NESCAC play, while Wesleyan improves to 7-3-5 on the year and 4-3-3 in conference action.
Wesleyan had the first chance of the afternoon, as Chris Porte fired a shot high. Conn answered with their first shot at 14:12 from Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) but his effort went wide. Wesleyan had the first real chance to open the scoring as the Camels were called for a foul in the box, giving the Cardinals a penalty kick. On the ensuing spot kick, Joshwin Jennings converted from the spot at 16:32 to make it 1-0.
The Wesleyan defense stymied the Camels attack, and just over 11 minutes later, the Cardinals doubled the lead. Wesleyan used a nice passing play from Porte, who found Will Martin, hitting the back of the net to make it 2-0. Conn pushed to find an answer before the break, but were unable to solve Wesleyan, trailing 2-0 at the half.
Four minutes into the second half, Wesleyan was able to find a third goal, as Yousuf Saeed hit the twine, making it 3-0. A few minutes later, Conn looked to have earned a penalty kick themselves, as Scoffone was taken down in the box, but the referee said play on.
Eventually, Conn was able to get on the board with just under 15 minutes to play. The Camels earned a free kick around midfield, and Rye Jaran (Downingtown, Pa.) delivered the ball into the box, where a Camel was yanked, earning a penalty kick. On the ensuing kick, Max Haberman (San Diego, Calif.) converted to make it 3-1. Conn pushed to close the deficit but were unable to solve the Cardinals, falling 3-1.
Conn outshot Wesleyan 12-10 overall, but the Cardinals held a 7-4 edge on shots on goal, with both teams earning four corner kicks.
Silvester got the start in goal, recording four saves. Haberman tallied the lone goal, while four Camels, Haberman, Sam Boehm (Lexington, Mass.), Dylan Hoke (Westport, Conn.), and Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) each recorded one shot on target.
Mathis Blanc got the nod in net, making three saves. Jennings, Martin, and Saeed each recorded a goal, while Zach Feldman and Porte each added one assist.
Conn will return to action on Saturday in the NESCAC Tournament, taking on Amherst in Amherst, Mass. at a time to be determined.
