NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over Mitchell College on Thursday night in a non-conference clash at Luce Field House.
The Camels bested their New London neighbor by final scores of 25-9, 25-21 and 25-18.
Riley Lord (Exeter, N.H.) hit .556 and recorded a match-high 11 kills to lead the way, and
Evie Lockwood Mullaney (Needham, Mass.) added eight kills while
Katherine Randall (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in seven kills and a match-high 13 digs.
Conn overwhelmed Mitchell in the opening set, ripping off 13 straight points on the serve of
Caroline Festersen (Omaha, Neb.) to grab a 13-1 lead. The Camels were a force at the net, blocking down four balls while adding 11 kills and only one error in the frame.
The Mariners settled in and made things more difficult in the second set. Mitchell took its biggest lead at 16-10 following a kill by Allison Blum, and later in the set Blum added another kill to give the visitors a 21-18 advantage. However, the Camels were unfazed and closed out the stanza behind a 7-0 run. Lockwood Mullaney provided three kills during the spurt, along with a block alongside Lord on the final point to clinch the set.
Conn sewed up the match with 18 kills in the final set, including four apiece from Lord and Lockwood Mullaney. The Camels added a pair of blocks to finish with 9.5 on the night.
Josie Kelly (Solana Beach, Calif.) paced the offense with 27 assists and a pair of aces.
Amanda Kreidler (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) finished with six kills while
Zoe Watts (Chicago, Ill.) and
Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.) added five each.
Blum and Genna Hyde each recorded five kills to lead Mitchell (5-8 overall).
Conn (9-4 overall) will next play at Wesleyan University on Saturday, October 5 at 2:00 p.m.
