NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Connecticut College men's water polo team hit the road, taking on Division 1 Iona University, falling to the host Gaels 20-10 on Wednesday night from Hynes Pool. With the loss, Conn falls to 6-12.
Iona opened the scoring just 23 seconds into the contest, but Conn responded 24 seconds later as Carson Neidert (West Palm Beach, Fla.) connected with Siaki Nelson (Houston, Texas) to make it 1-1. The Gaels ended the opening quarter on a 4-0 run to lead 5-1 after one.
Iona used a strong second quarter to pull away from Conn, outscoring the Camels 6-3 in the frame. For Conn, Jesse Ellis (Fresno, Calif.) scored twice, while Jeffrey Harrington (San Diego, Calif.) added a tally, as Conn trailed 11-4 at the break.
Iona opened the third quarter on a 3-0, before Ellis completed his hat trick to make it 14-5. Another 3-0 run from the Gaels pushed the lead to 17-5, before Neidert scored late in the quarter, as Conn trailed 17-6 heading to the fourth.
Iona opened up the final frame with another goal, before two straight strikes from Cormac Stevens (Philadelphia, Pa.) cut the deficit to 18-8. The Gaels got another goal, before Stevens completed his hat trick to make it 19-9 with three and half minutes to play. Iona added one more goal, before Sebastian Parilov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) beat the buzzer to make the final margin 20-10.
Parilov got the start in goal tallying 10 saves. Ellis and Stevens paced the Camels with three goals a piece, while Neidert added a goal and an assist, with Harrington, Nelson, and Parilov adding one goal.
Conn returns to action next Wednesday, as the Camels return home to take on Wheaton College for senior day at 7:00 p.m. in Lott Natatorium.
