Women's Basketball Blows Past Mitchell In Season Opener

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team opened the 2024-25 season with a 95-47 victory over Mitchell College on Friday night at Luce Field House.

Mia Xerras (Charlotte, N.C.) netted a game-high 19 points—all in the first half—and shot 7-for-8 from the floor, including 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. Addi Hunter (Saint George, Vt.) chipped in 12 points and six rebounds, and Catie Donadio (Clinton, Conn.), Coco Rourke (Madison, Conn.), Lily Funk (East Rochester, N.Y.) and Hayle Thompson (Maynard, Mass.) added eight points apiece.

After Mitchell scored on the opening possession of the game, Conn ripped off a 17-0 run to immediately seize control. Xerras and Avery Burns (Orleans, Mass.) sparked the stretch with back-to-back threes, and Donadio and Hunter each contributed four points during the spurt.

The Camels led 24-8 after the first quarter and kept the pressure on in the second. Xerras led the charge with 16 points in the period, going 6-for-6 from the floor and drilling four threes. She nearly outscored the Mariners in the half as Conn took a 48-20 lead into the locker room at the break.

Funk and Rourke combined for all 16 of their points in the second half as the Camels continued the assault. Rourke also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, including four on the offensive end.

Conn's three newcomers all found the scoring column in the first game of their collegiate careers. Sydney Marshall (Enfield, Conn.) paced the group with five points and grabbed six boards. Valeria Santiago Dedos (Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico) finished with four points and four assists in 12 minutes, and Paige Raynor (Storrs, Conn.) hit a three-pointer and pulled down one rebound.

Jordyn Streitmatter scored 12 points off the bench to lead the Mariners (0-2 overall).

Conn (1-0 overall) will next host the University of Hartford on Saturday, November 16 at 1:00 p.m.
