Men's Soccer Opens NCAA Tournament With Dominant 4-1 Win Over Suffolk

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's soccer team opened the NCAA Tournament with a strong performance in the First Round, defeating visiting Suffolk University 4-1 on Saturday from Freeman Field. With the win, Conn improves to 11-2-6 on the year, while Suffolk closes out the campaign at 10-7-5.

Conn came out flying, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the contest. Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) played a beautiful pass over the top to Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) who touched the ball home to make it 1-0 at 5:12. The Camels nearly doubled their lead through Socffone, but his shot at 22:19 hit the post and bounced straight back to Nathan Harlow.

Just five minutes later, Conn once again thought they found a second goal, as Charlie Miles (Tarrytown, N.Y.) connected with a header, but the shot came off the crossbar. However, the Camels finally doubled their lead as Alessandro Horvath Diano (New Haven, Conn.) found Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.) who scored at 32:18, to give Conn a 2-0 advantage at the break.

The second half started much like the first with an early tally for Conn. Perugini picked up the ball around the edge of the box, and fired a shot in off the far post to make it 3-0  at 52:00. The scoring looked like it was going to end there, but with just under eight minutes left, Conn got a fourth.

Jorge Mendo (Zaragoza, Spain) collected a ball on the outside of the box, made his way past two Suffolk defenders, before firing home to make it 4-0 at 82:19. However, the Rams got a late consolation marker, as Brady Sorensen hit Erik Van Even at 84:24 to put Suffolk on the board. Conn closed out the final five and a half minutes, to earn the 4-1 win.

Conn outshot Suffolk 14-8 overall, including 6-1 on shots on target, holding a slim 3-2 edge on corner kicks.

Silvester got the start in goal, picking up the win. Perugini paced the Camels with three points on one goal and one assist, while Mendo, Scoffone, and Spatz all added one goal. Additionally, Horvath Diano picked up a helper.

Harlow got the start in goal for Suffolk recording two saves. Van Even tallied the lone Ram goal, while Sorensen picked up the assist.

Conn advances to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, taking on No. 19 Franklin and Marshall at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow on Freeman Field.
