Field Hockey Falls to No. 3 Williams in NESCAC Quarterfinals

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The seventh-seeded Connecticut College field hockey team was knocked out of the 2024 NESCAC Championship by second-seeded Williams College on Saturday afternoon, falling by a 2-0 final in a quarterfinal match-up at Williamson Field.

The Camels put up a tough fight against the Ephs, who entered the game ranked third in the country. Goalie Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) and the Conn defense kept Williams off the scoreboard in the first half, and limited the deficit to only one goal throughout much of the second.

Madeline Rowland recorded the game-winning goal just 3:11 into the second half for the Ephs, who advanced to next weekend's semifinals at top-seeded Middlebury College. Claire Colvin provided the insurance marker with 3:48 left in the contest.

Williams (14-2 overall) finished with a 17-3 advantage in total shots and a 6-3 edge in penalty corners. Goalie Ellie Smith recorded one save in the shutout.

Conn's best scoring chances came early in the second quarter. Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) had an attempt from the right side that was blocked out of bounds. After the ensuing restart, the Camels earned a penalty corner that resulted in a blast from the point by Sadie Gearan (Lynnfield, Mass.) that was denied by Smith.

Winemaster kept the Camels in the game with seven saves.

The loss ends the season for the Camels (6-10 overall), who qualified for the NESCAC Championship for the first time since 2012. Conn's three NESCAC victories were also the most since 2016.
