NEW LONDON, Conn. – Shane Zarcone (Huntington, N.Y.) scored with 1:23 left in overtime to give the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team a 5-4 win over Manhattanville on Tuesday night from Dayton Arena. With the win, Conn improves to 4-1, while falls Manhattanville 3-3-1
Conn opened the game quickly, tallying the first goal just over five minutes into the contest. Cole Watson (London, Ontario) fired a puck to the front of the net that banked in off a Manhattanville defender to make the score 1-0. With just 50 seconds remaining Conn doubled the lead. Jack Houser (Arlington, Mass.) connected with Andrew Eberling (Mount Laurel, N.J.) who found John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) on the back post who tapped it home to make it 2-0 after one.
Manhattanville cut the deficit in half 3:33 into the middle frame. Elijah Devereaux got the Valiants on the board, as Lucas Baksay picked up the assist. Just over a minute later, Manhattanville tied the game as Zach Choueiri picked up a rebound and beat Primo Baldassarre (Glenolden, Pa.) to make it 2-2. However, the tie didn't last long, as just three and a half minutes later, Conn retook the lead. Will Winship (Andover, Mass.) laid the puck off to Russo, who dropped it back to Reid Shafer (Yantis, Texas) who fired home, to give the Camels the lead. Conn held on for the rest of the period to lead 3-2 heading to the third.
The Valiants tied the game early in the third period as Artem Mateichenko scored on the power play at 2:41. Just over three minutes later, the Camels retook the lead. Jon Barker (North Kingstown, R.I.) put Conn back in front as Jack Luca (Milton, Mass.) and Will Lawrence (Bethesda, Md.) picked up the assists. However, just a minute and a half later, Manhattanville re-tied the game, on a Nicholas Rogers tally. Neither side found the winner in regulation, so the game headed to overtime tied at four.
With a minute and a half left in overtime, Zarcone picked up a loose puck at center, and went in on the breakaway, beating Tripp Clarke to give Conn the 5-4 win.
Manhattanville outshot Conn 29-27, while the Camels held a 38-23 advantage on face-off wins.
Baldassarre got the win in his collegiate debut, finishing with 25 saves. Russo paced the Camels with a goal and an assist, while Barker, Shafer, Watson, and Zarcone all added one goal. Additionally, Eberling, Houser, Lawrence, Luca, and Winship all chipped in one assist. Russo led the way in the circle, winning 14 of 22 draws, as Conn finished the night 3-4 on the penalty kill and 0-3 on the power play.
Clarke got the start in goal for Manhattanville, finishing with 22 saves. Mateichenko paced the Valiants with a goal and an assist, while Lane Paddison added two helpers. Manhattanville finished 1-4 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill.
Conn returns to action on Sunday afternoon as the Camels host Salve Regina at 3:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena.
