NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Connecticut College men's soccer team will take on Williams College tomorrow afternoon in the NESCAC semifinals, with kickoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Middlebury, Vt.
In the quarterfinals last weekend, Conn defeated Amherst in penalties to reach the conference semifinals for the fourth straight season. Four Camels converted from the penalty spot and
Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) made two saves to help Conn advance.
Matt Quiros-Newton's (Alajuela, Costa Rica) first goal of the year gave the Camels a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute and Conn took the one-goal advantage into halftime. Amherst netted the equalizer in the 71st minute when Michael Cherico's fourth goal of the season found the back of the net. The teams combined for five shots in the overtime. In the shootout,
Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.),
Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.), Maco Perugini (Medway, Mass.), and
Gavin Mpiana (Cape Town, South Africa) all converted their kicks from the penalty spot to help the Camels advance.
Conn has allowed just nine goals this season thanks to the effort of its defense and goalkeeper Silvester. Silvester carries a 0.56 goals against average and a 0.859 save percentage. Scoffone ranks among the NESCAC leaders in goals (7) and leads the Camels with 14 points, while teammate
Marco Perugini has handed out a team-leading five assists and has nine points.
Williams and Conn College played to a 1-1 draw on October 26. The Ephs own a slight edge in the NESCAC postseason series, 2-1-2, and fell to the Camels in PKs (5-4) in the 2022 semifinals after the teams played to a scoreless tie. The Ephs are looking to reach their first final since 2018 while Conn. College is seeking its third trip to the championship match in four years.
The winner of Conn and Williams will advance to the NESCAC championship game on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. against the winner of the other semifinal between Middlebury and Bowdoin.
