Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine – The eighth-seeded Connecticut College women's volleyball team fell by a 3-0 final against top-seeded Colby College on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Championship at the Crook Center.
The Mules (23-2 overall), ranked 16th in the country in the latest AVCA poll, won by set scores of 25-14, 25-14 and 25-23 to advance to next weekend's semifinals. As the highest remaining seed, Colby will host the final four teams on November 15-16.
Colby's Brady Moseley led all players with 11 kills and added 15 digs to record her third consecutive double-double. Sarah Friedrichs added nine kills while LJ Grant chipped in eight.
The Camels, making their 17th appearance in the NESCAC Championship, were led by
Mila Chan (San Francisco, Calif.) and
Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.) with six kills apiece.
Emma Hoffmann (Salt Lake City, Utah) contributed team highs of 14 digs and three aces, and
Josie Kelly (Solana Beach, Calif.) assisted on 12 of Conn's 14 kills.
The Camels kept it close in the opening set until a 5-0 run gave the hosts a 13-8 cushion. Later, the Mules pushed the lead to 22-12 behind a 7-1 stretch, and a kill and block by Cyanne Jones put Colby on top 1-0 in the match.
Another 7-1 spurt put the Mules in control early in the second set. Conn stayed within striking distance until four straight points gave Colby an 18-10 edge, and the hosts closed out the set by winning seven of the final nine points to go up 2-0.
The third set featured big runs and wild momentum swings. After Chan helped the Camels out to a 4-2 lead with a kill and a block, Colby responded with a 5-0 run to go back on top at 11-7. Conn fired back with five straight points of its own to retake the lead, but the Mules answered with seven straight to go up 19-13. With their backs to the wall, the Camels fought back behind an 8-0 run that included three aces by Hoffmann to grab a 21-19 edge. However, Moseley was the difference down the stretch with three big kills, and Jordan Lee sewed up the win with an ace on match point.
Colby held a 42-14 advantage in total kills for the match. The Camels committed 20 errors—10 fewer than in last week's regular season finale against the Mules—and finished with eight total blocks.
Conn ends the 2024 season with an overall record of 15-9. The Camels, who graduate only two seniors, are slated to return the team leaders in kills (Chan, Wartelle), assists (Kelly) and digs (
Taylor Merrifield) next year.
