NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team topped Mitchell College by a 76-64 final on Monday night in non-conference action at Luce Field House.
Cam Schainfeld (Newton, Mass.) paced the Camels with a career-high 24 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the floor. He also went 7-for-10 from the charity stripe and finished with four assists and three steals.
Garrett Clar (Victor, N.Y.) and
Andrew Hartel (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) pitched in with season highs of 15 and 14 points, respectively, as Conn shot 48 percent as a team.
Conn's defense limited the Mariners to nearly 20 points fewer than their season average. Mitchell shot 42 percent from the field but went only 4-for-18 from three-point range. Jaylyn Clardy led Mitchell (7-3 overall) with 17 points while Brandon Lee chipped in 13 points and Wilton Causey added 11.
The Mariners led for most of the first 10 minutes, taking their largest lead at 16-8 on a bucket in the paint by Lee with 11:20 to go in the half. The Camels later countered with a 12-0 spurt that pushed them into the lead. Conn pulled in front when
Elias Espinosa (Leonia, N.J.) grabbed a defensive board and fired a long outlet pass that resulted in a fast-break lay-up by Schainfeld.
Conn closed the half strong, getting threes from Schainfeld and Espinosa in the final 1:42 to go into the locker room with a 35-31 advantage. Schainfeld led all scorers with 11 points at the break.
The Camels never trailed in the second half, padding the lead with a 13-2 run that featured five points from Espinosa. Conn led by as many as 16 and never let the margin dip below eight. Although the Mariners made a late push, the hosts sealed the deal by scoring 12 of their final 14 points from the free throw line.
Espinosa finished with nine points and made plays all over the floor, adding seven rebounds and a game-high six steals. Both Clar and Hartel were efficient on the offensive end, shooting 6-for-10 and 6-for-8 from the floor, respectively.
Conn (5-4 overall) will next play at Rhode Island College on Thursday, December 19 at 1:00 p.m.
